Igor,

I'd like to avoid making the Windows clients more complex.  
The current Windows and Gtk+ clients can display multiple 
image windows.  If you want to avoid using the graphics 
library (because of tracing),  there is nothing stopping 
you from creating your own raster, calling the display 
callbacks and so creating another window.  This would allow 
the tracing code to run on both Windows and Unix.
