For what it's worth, Acrobat Reader 5 on MacOS X renders winding.pdf the 
same was as in Russell's screenshots, including the scale dependence. 
Preview.app (which uses Apple's Quartz pdf implementation) renders 
similar to the high-res acrobat behavior, except the last instance is 
entirely missing:
