Thank you both for your replies,

It turns out that my device was in limbo between 7.0x
and 8.x (I think I began developing it around 7.2x).

I've reworked my changes into a copy of the 8.00
gdevbit.c, overprinting is working correctly, and I
feel a little silly for raising it on the mailing list
at all...
