GSview with Ghostscript or Ghostscript alone can view EPS files.
GSview gives you a GUI, while with Ghostscript you need to type 
a command line or PostScript commands inside Ghostscript to do 
it.

Yes, but not GIF because it is still subject to a patent in some 
parts of the world.
I suggest you use JPEG if the image is a photo and PNG otherwise.
>From GSview, select "File | Convert", select the jpeg or png16m 
devices, a suitable resolution then OK.
